    • Researchers at the University of Rochester have shown that the human brain—once thought to be a seriously flawed decision maker—is actually hard-wired to allow us to make the best decisions possible with the information we are given. The findings are published in today's issue of the journal Neuron.

  • I hope SocialStream comes to fruition one day. This site from CMU looks like quite an interesting proposal. -- Rick Cogley

From the site: "Directed to help improve the online community orkut, the project's scope was not to simply redesign the interface. Our team considered how online social networking could bring greater value to users, especially for ages above twenty. After initial brainstorming and research, we chose to focus on the effects of a new model for online social networking: a unified social network that, as a service, provides social data to many other applications. Our user research examined needs related to online as well as offline social networking and considered how they related to a unified social network service model. Through this user research we identified a set of archetypes that represent common behavior patterns that existed across multiple study participants and also formulated a summarized list of their high level needs. "

The best reason to use Plotbot is to collaborate with other writers—partners or strangers! It's difficult enough to work with another person, let alone keep an updated version of your document. With Plotbot, we do all of that work for you. You and your partners can all write online—even simultaneously—and we'll keep track of who wrote what. You can revert to earlier versions, edit, or comment. And soon, you'll even be able to vote on which parts of the screenplay you like

  • [we used]...a new method we named whole-genome shotgun sequencing, which worked by randomly selecting and sequencing DNA fragments from the organism's genome, then computationally reassembling it

independence has continued to be an essential aspect of my science's progress

It is not hard to understand why investigators, particularly young scientists, are satisfied being data generators, as government agencies and some foundations continue to pay out hundreds of millions of dollars for just DNA sequencing or, even worse, microarrays, creating huge datasets but seldom any real scientific insight

I was certain, after all of our success with our new whole-genome shotgun sequencing method, that the Human Genome Project would adopt our methods, but the federal human genome project was bureaucratically moribund and unable to change. In truth there was no incentive to change. The scientists in the various genome centers benefited hugely- some on the order of $100 million per year or more- from a process that was essentially a decentralized, widely distributed public-works project

data generation without big questions and computational approaches capable of answering them is only of trivial value. My team now has continued to apply the random selection and shotgun sequencing methods as a major discovery engine, exploring environmental research through "metagenomic studies," investigating life in the Sargasso Sea and also in the human gut

It has recently been argued that the generation of large data sets is the new science. I agree only insofar as the data sets are used to ask and answer unique questions about life. It is clear to me, for example, that the only hope we have for understanding our own biology is to generate thousands of complete human genomes together with well-defined phenotypic data from the same individuals. Such data will reveal much about what is nature and what is nurture in our species. Likewise, extensive metagenomic analysis of the microorganisms associated with each of those individuals.

  • This is a Twitter app built in Adobe AIR, and is very good. Can't search in Japanese (or I bet other multi-byte languages), can't block users. I think Twhirl beats this in several respects.

From the site - "TweetDeck enables users to split their main feed (All Tweets) into topic or group specific columns allowing a broader overview of tweets. The default columns can contain All Tweets from your timeline, @replies directed to you and direct messages. The GROUP, SEARCH and REPLIES buttons then allow the user to make up additional columns populated from the live tweet information. Once created these additional columns will automatically update allowing the user to keep track of a twitter threads far easier."

  • Screenflow looks interesting, and must compete with SnapzPro X and iShowU in the screencasting space on Mac. I think I will try it.

From the site: "ScreenFlow is an application for creating amazing screen recordings on your Mac. Using a unique new screen capture system, powerful enough to capture the contents of your entire desktop at the same time as your video camera, microphone and computer's audio, you'll be creating incredible screencasts in no time."

I have an online collaboration solution for you that can synchronize folders across Windows, OS X, and mobile platforms... easily and quickly. Or perhaps you need a program that lets you take notes in real time with your colleagues. Some of the online collaboration tools I reviewed share the same features, like collaborative editing or file sharing. Others are completely unique, for example one of the tools brings new meaning to the term " whiteboard". But each and every one of the them promises to do one thing: allow groups, whether geographically distributed or sitting across the conference table from each other, to work together faster and more efficiently than before. - By Tyler Wall
  • PR: With greater capabilities and ease of use in mind, Mikogo launches its new version with several new features backing up its cost-free solution to online meetings.
